On October 5, 2015, California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed into law a bill making the Golden State the fifth state in the nation to allow assisted suicide.

In his signing statement, Gov. Brown stated that if he were terminally ill and suffering great pain, it would be “a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill.” Gov. Brown added that he would not “deny that right to others.”

Opponents of the new law expressed concern that it “would invite insurance companies to take advantage of poor patients by offering to pay for the cost of life-ending drugs but not for the expensive treatments that could save lives. ‘There is a deadly mix when you combine our broken healthcare system with assisted suicide, which immediately becomes the cheapest treatment,’ said Marilyn Golden, a senior policy analyst at the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund in Berkeley. ‘The so-called protections written into the bill really amount to very little.’”

Californians Against Assisted Suicide commented that “‘[e]nd-of-life treatment options are already limited for millions of people — constrained by poverty, disability discrimination, and other obstacles. Adding this so-called “choice” into our dysfunctional health care system will push people into cheaper lethal options.’”
California State Sen. Bob Huff (R-San Dimas) added, “‘Let’s call this for what it really is: It’s not death with dignity. This is state-assisted death, physician-assisted death and relative-assisted death.’”

Assisted suicide advocates in New York are already ramping up their efforts to make New York the next state to legalize assisted suicide. New Yorkers for Life will work ceaselessly to prevent this outcome from coming about.
